Light

Form and Order Maker
Light Research

I chose to study light design using La Tourette, designed by Corbusier. This building uses light wells, light cannons and other light apertures to manipulate natural light. It also provides an aesthetically pleasing enviornment for assembly. Light is very controlled and precise within the structure, making it a great example of successful light design.

Light Model

I made 3 prototype light models in order to test a few different light designs. The models are useful in viewing preliminary designs from all angles. However, drawing in a program such as AutoCAD makes an idea more accurate and realistic

Narrative

This project is designed to be a non-denominatinal chapel. The main influence on the project is light. Creative use of natural light ultimately transformed the style of the chapel.

Ranking

There are three chapels in this project. The three chapels are the main areas in the building and they are ranked as follows:

1. Main Chapel

2. Memorial Chapel

3. Meditation Chapel

Site Analysis

A contextual analysis must be conducted in order design a building that fits the surrounding area and matches nearby structures.

Light and Orientation

The main focus of this project was to use and control natural light. The orientation and positioning of the building is very important. In order to get maximum usage of sunlight

Statement

I wanted to use sunlight to express a degree of symbolism in the project. Certain light apertures and plane shapes were chosen to create an atmosphere of openess and acceptance in the Main and Memorial chapels. The Meditation chapel focuses the light in the middle of the room and spreads outward.

I chose a site on the Northeast side of campus because of its connection to existing student service buildings. The site is also positioned between the dorms and the campus center.
